Federal Court Deadline Approaches For Additional Information From Government on Rapist Former Irish Olympic Swim Coach George Gibney’s American Immigration Files

As we reported last month, U.S. District Court Senior Judge Charles Breyer has ordered the Department of Homeland Security to produce a better version of the Vaughn Index that was filed to justify the wholesale withholding of almost all of the 102 pages in the record of George Gibney’s immigration to this country as a resident alien, as well as his likely application for citizenship in recent years.

The 60-day deadline set by Judge Breyer is at the halfway mark, and it comes in the wake of our publication of the Irish government’s 1998 Murphy Commission report on sexual abuse in swimming, which concluded that in light of the 27 criminal charges in 1993, arising from the original police investigation of Gibney’s sex crimes in Ireland, the complainants and the six witnesses to the commission “were vindicated.” Currently, Irish legislator Maureen O’Sullivan is reviving efforts to get Gibney returned there and tried on these charges — plus others, at least one of which was Gibney’s rape of a teen swimmer on American soil.
