While a few documentaries take up most of the space, many filmmakers from diverse perspectives have devoted the last several years to compiling a record of the long-term damage of our most popular sport.

This week Isaac Solotaroff and Jesse Handsher released their Casualties of the Gridiron, a close-up look at the aftermath toll for retired players. The story is rolling out in eight short episodes. Synopses are at http://casualtiesofthegridiron.com/.

The trailer for the series and the first video, which debuted Monday, streams at the website of GQ magazine: http://video.gq.com/series/casualties-of-the-gridiron. Episode 1 focuses on ex-New York Jets and Miami Dolphins quarterback Ray Lucas. I look forward to future treatments; one includes my friend Brent Boyd, an early challenger of the NFL-NFLPA disability claims system, who came in prescient public conflict with the late Dave Duerson.
