I once wrote to The New York Times‘ Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and columnist, Anthony Lewis, author of the classic book on the Supreme Court, Gideon’s Trumpet, who died yesterday at 85. My letter parodied Lewis’s propensity for overusing colons.

“I am delighted,” Lewis wrote back, adding that he would heed my mockery (which, I should add, was embedded in my deep admiration of his brilliant journalism).

“I am even going to resist the temptation to colonize you herein.”
