McDevitt Cites Error in ‘Wrestling Babylon’ Death List, and Meltzer Clarifies

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

From the excellent coverage of the Waxman documents on drugs in pro wrestling, in the current issue of Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter:

When the list of deaths (July 19, 2007 Observer) was brought up, Jerry McDevitt said “Vince, for example, have you ever heard of Javier Hernandez in Mexico City?” Vince never had. The wrestler Oro, who died in the ring in 1993 from a brain aneurism on an Arena Mexico show, was born Jesus Hernandez so presumably that was who he was talking about. McDevitt then said to McMahon, “Have you ever heard of Scott Irwin?” Scott Irwin died in 1987 from cancer. Vince said he never had heard of him, even though Irwin worked for the company for one year and was half of the tag team champions for five months in 1978 when the tag titles meant you would headline mid-level markets and were considered far more prestigious than they would be today. At the time he used the name Yukon Eric of the Yukon Lumberjacks tag team, managed by Lou Albano. Neither name was on the list in the Observer, which only covered the years 1996 through 2007 and was limited to those who had worked for major league promotions. Both were listed in Irv Muchnick’s book “Wrestling Babylon” which McDevitt may have been studying for his prep work, although when mentioning that list, he said the Muchnick list was sloppy journalism, laughing at it because it included a couple of people twice. I picked up the book, and the list does list unknown wrestler Tiny Anderson twice.
