Here’s what the major newspaper in San Diego pulled off the wire services on con man youth swim coach James Pantera:

“• A San Diego swim coach alleged to have multiple identities and a felony conviction called his accuser a ‘bully’ with a checkered past. James Pantera issued a statement one day after a complaint was filed with USA Swimming by Mike Saltzstein, a former vice president with the governing body. The statement said Saltzstein is ‘attempting to smear the name of a well respected and liked swim coach and official who has passed numerous background checks.'”

The Union Tribune appears not to have reported anything previously — let alone summarized Saltzstein’s 103-page dossier on Pantera.

“Well respected and liked swim coach and official”? No one has ever heard of the guy.

“Passed numerous background checks”? Isn’t that the whole point?
