Matt Chaney, author of the superb but barely noticed 2009 book Spiral of Denial: Muscle Doping in American Football, is our most fearless historian of football’s harm. In this post at his blog last year, Chaney writes about the 1980 murder-suicide of retired Kansas Chiefs offensive tackle Jim Tyrer. Chaney calls Tyrer “one of the greatest offensive tackles in history,” who remains shut out of the Pro Football Hall of Fame only because “the league and media suddenly wanted to forget him.”
