WWE is getting good press for the 60-day suspension of Darren “William Regal” Matthews for a second violation of the company Wellness Policy.
We don’t know what drug was involved; we only know that Regal didn’t have a doctor’s prescription for it. On the speculation that it couldn’t be steroids or human growth hormone, Wade Keller of Pro Wrestling Torch makes the right point, that it’s a misconception “that you must look like a bodybuilder to be taking performance-enhancing drugs. That is not the case, as many wrestlers have taken now banned drugs over the years just to tone up what is otherwise, relatively speaking, an average physique for a wrestler.” The link to Keller’s full comment is http://pwtorch.com/artman2/publish/WWE_News_3/article_25649.shtml.
As usual, wrestling sites forward Regal comments from the blog of that folksy font of wisdom, WWE announcer Jim Ross. Last summer, emerging from the funeral of Nancy and Daniel Benoit in Florida, Ross said: “This is not a steroid issue. That horse has got to be put in the barn and unsaddled.”
