Garda Finally Clarifies — Says 4-Year-Old Complaint of George Gibney’s 1982 Molestation of 11-Year-Old Girl Remains Open

Weeks after my seemingly routine inquiry about the status of a Dublin woman’s 2020 complaint to the national police surrounding a 1982 incident at the pool of the then Burlington Hotel, in which she said she was sexually assaulted, at age 11, by former Irish Olympic swimming coach George Gibney, An Garda Síochána has finally responded in substance.

The delay was marked by requests by the Garda press office — first that I reword the query and then that I provide the date and the “station” where the woman’s complaint was filed. (Garda refused to accept the simple reference number given to me at the time by a detective sergeant.)

Today Sergeant Margaret Flanagan of the press office emailed: “This is an ongoing criminal investigation. There is no further update, at this time.
