I have not met Kristen Cunnane, the award-winning assistant to legendary Cal women’s swimming coach Teri McKeever (who broke the gender barrier on U.S. Olympic swimming staffs).

Still, I want to congratulate Cunnane on the news that she has settled for a publicly announced $2.85 million, and perhaps more important, a public apology, in the case of her sexual abuse by two teachers when she was a student at the Joaquin Moraga (California) Middle School. See http://www.contracostatimes.com/ci_23244830/moraga-school-district-settles-sex-abuse-lawsuit-2?IADID=Search-www.contracostatimes.com-www.contracostatimes.com.

Last year we passed along the story of the cancellation, and subsequent reinstatement, of Cunnane’s appearance at a local swim club’s clinic:

* “Road to Omaha: Thanks, Dave Zirin. Also, California Country Club Backs Down and Allows Abuse Survivor to Conduct Swimming Clinic,” June 15, 2012, https://concussioninc.net/?p=5738

Uncommon courage + a slam-dunk outcome: exactly the model other victims of sexual molestation need in our fight to help transform them from victims to heroes.

Friends in my parts know what a cranky contrarian I can be about local sports franchises. But I’m now a Cal women’s swim fan for life.
