Presumably, lawyers Michael Glazier, a leading NCAA consigliere, and Alan Sullivan are about to wrap up their investigation of the University of Utah’s epic-fail investigation of abusive swim coach Greg Winslow. The smart money is that the report will acknowledge that mistakes were made (as the passive-voice corporate types love to put it) and let athletic director Chris Hill off the hook. But go ahead and prove me wrong, Michael and Alan.

Like other journalists, Tim Joyce and I have gotten a ton of emails from athletes and their families pointing, in our mind, to a clear cover-up. Some of the most compelling material is flatly factual, devoid of rhetoric or an agenda. Vlas Lezin’s, for instance.

Lezin was a Russian swimmer who got royally screwed out of his scholarship for the most trivial and capricious reasons. I’ve uploaded his full story, in his own voice, at http://muchnick.net/lezin.pdf. Despite the bad pun in the headline above, what is most striking is Lezin’s lack of bitterness.

Which makes this introductory passage all the more illustrative of Winslow’s and Utah’s m.o. with their swimmers:

“1. I was never a rumor-guy so I have not witnessed or heard any stories about his moves on the swimmers.

2. To give you example, from observing Greg’s interactions with Kate Charipar for the first several months I thought she was his wife. Back then, I did not know that she hold a compliance officer position in the university.”
