Chris Benoit’s Father on the Astin Indictment
Monday, June 2nd, 2008
Mike Benoit, Chris’s father, has responded to this blog’s take on the Dr. Phil Astin indictment:
You and the news media continue to put forth the theory that steroids and drugs were the major contributing factor in the tragic events that took place on the weekend of June 22-24, 2007. You need to look at some of the facts that surround this case and present documented evidence to support your claims, if they exist.
I continue to put forward the findings of doctors Bailes, Omalu and Cantu that the underlying cause of the tragedy was the condition of my son’s brain. They arrived at this conclusion after examining samples of Chris’s brain. The brain samples were provided by Dr. Kris Sperry, who is the chief medical examiner for the State of Georgia. This condition, called CTE or Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, took away my son’s ability to make rational decisions and also his ability to control his emotions. The doctors all agree that steroids cannot cause this condition.
The recent indictment of Dr. Phil Astin indicates that my son was taking a combination of pain killers and muscle relaxers at the rate of two pills per day in 2007. That amount of pills could hardly be called excessive and are consistent with the findings of the medical examiner.
I believe that the steroid issue will not be fully understood until (A) the case against Signature Pharmacy becomes public, (B) I am able to access my son’s medical files.
If we are to believe that “roid rage” played a part then we must accept that this rage took place over a period of days. Conventional wisdom does not support that theory.
