On Tuesday, March 24, the SLAM! Wrestling site will have a bonus preview of the book’s new 3,400-word introduction. The essay focuses on the rise to power of Donald Trump as it relates to the pop culture phenomenon of pro wrestling and to Trump’s business and political ties to Vince and Linda McMahon, the founders and principal owners of WWE. As the country slides into the near-apocalyptic conditions of the coronavirus pandemic, I write, “To say that Trump epitomizes or encapsulates or illustrates or emblemizes or legitimizes WrestleWorld is to engage in rare understatement for a field of human endeavor that aims low and little, while expressing itself low and large.”
In the original edition of CHRIS & NANCY, reality show buffoon Trump is but a bit player in the WWE ensemble. Nothing in our recent national history illustrates better than the Benoit tragedy the simultaneous softening and coarsening of a society that cares much more about fake records in real sports than it does real deaths in a fake one.
