But the Benoit family tragedy is no angle; it is chilling, real-life detail on the demise of the sport’s greatest bell-to-bell performer of the last 20 years. The reason that detail merits closer scrutiny, even in the absence of some sensational conspiracy theory, is the insight it provides into the larger pathologies of pro wrestling.

With other and more substantive discrepancies in the official explanations for what happened after Chris Benoit killed his wife and their son and himself, I think we can officially bury the question of why the Benoit’s German Shepherd guard dogs were not in the enclosed area near the backyard pool, as Chris’s final text messages had said.
Even many who admire the thoroughness of my effort to get to the bottom of Matthew Greenberg’s Wikipedia edit (with the eerily early word of Nancy Benoit’s death) wonder where it’s heading. Well, you can include me on that list. But new information today carries a hint.
This is not an editorial comment on the selection by President-elect Obama of Rick Warren of the Saddleback Church in Orange County, California, to deliver the invocation at next month’s Inaugural. It is just a trivia note.
