Two months ago we wrote about the suspensions of University of Georgia swimmer Chase Kalisz and coach Jack Bauerle – the former for academic ineligibility, the latter for altering or covering up Kalisz’s academic record. See “Chase Kalisz’s Academic Scandal Is Just One More Blemish on the North Baltimore Aquatic Club Olympic Factory,” January 10, https:\/\/concussioninc.net\/?p=8471<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As it turns out, Kalisz’s own suspension lasted only two weeks. Bauerle, however, remains suspended. Or in limbo suspension – barred from some coaching activities but not others. Or something.<\/p>\n

I wish I could give you a better answer on the eve of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I women’s swimming and diving championship meet in Minneapolis, where Bauerle’s Georgia team is defending its national title. And the answer would seem readily available. But it is not.<\/p>\n

Two weeks ago, Rachel G. Bowers of the Athens Banner-Herald <\/i>wrote that Bauerle was “in jail” – allowed to supervise his athletes in warm-ups but then forced off the deck during the Southeastern Conference meet itself. See “The curious case of Jack Bauerle,” March 3, http:\/\/onlineathens.com\/sports\/college-sports\/2014-02-22\/rachel-g-bowers-curious-case-jack-bauerle<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On the Georgia athletics website, the story of the Lady Bulldogs’ quest to repeat at the NCAA’s quotes Harvey Humphries, the senior associate head coach. Bauerle is not mentioned.<\/p>\n

I emailed Steve Colquitt, the Georgia sports communications staffer who is with the swim team in Minneapolis, and asked him about Bauerle’s status. In an auto-response, Colquitt said he was out of town and I should call the sports department in Athens. When I did that, I was told that nobody there knew the answer to my question and I should wait to hear back later from Colquitt.<\/p>\n

(I also emailed Coach Bauerle; he has not responded.)<\/p>\n

To review, academic underachiever Chase Kalisz has been a training partner of Michael Phelps’ and is part of the power circle at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. His mother Cathy is on the boards of both the club and Maryland Swimming. Last year, while the National Board of Review was investigating allegations of misconduct by two swimmers against another swimmer at North Baltimore, USA Swimming was publishing on its website a fawning article about Chase’s younger brother, Connor Kalisz.<\/p>\n

I’ll let readers know when the University of Georgia gets back to me about what’s up with Jack Bauerle. Who knows – it might even be before the first heat of the first event tomorrow.<\/p>\n
