No American Swimming Coaches Association World Clinic would be complete without a seminar by Pat Hogan, the managing director of club development for USA Swimming. And sure enough, the schedule of events today includes the Hogan-led all-day session for ASCA Level 2-certified coaches entitled “The Leadership School.”<\/p>\n

Hogan knows from leadership. As chronicled in Chapter 5 of the ebook I published in April, PENN STATE IN THE POOL: The Cover-Up of the USA Swimming Youth Coach Sex Abuse Scandal<\/em>, Hogan supervised Everett Uchiyama, USA Swimming’s national team director from 2001 to 2006. Then a former swimmer emailed the organization with details of the abuse she had endured at Uchiyama’s hands when he was head coach of a club program in California; they’d had a sexual relationship starting in 1990, when she was 16.<\/p>\n

Uchiyama immediately resigned. But before you knew it, he had resurfaced as the aquatics director of the Country Club of Colorado, virtually within spitting distance of USA Swimming headquarters in Colorado Springs. (Which was convenient, since in the hillbilly hell that is the incestuous world of swimming, Uchiyama’s wife Helen was also on Hogan’s staff and still is – she is currently listed as the field services administrative assistant.)<\/p>\n

Uchiyama also landed one of the lucrative Swim America teaching school franchises under the control of ASCA executive director John Leonard. How about that!<\/p>\n

Court documents produced in one of the numerous civil lawsuits against USA Swimming, seeking to hold the organization liable for sex abuse by its coaches, show that Hogan was a reference on Uchiyama’s country club job application:<\/p>\n

Attendance … “Acceptable”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dependability … “Acceptable”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Initiative … “Acceptable”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ability to get along … “Acceptable”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Reason for leaving? … “Personal choice.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eligible for rehire? … “Yes”<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“Great people person,” Hogan wrapped up to the job screener, according to an interview form.<\/p>\n

Uchiyama got bounced from the Country Club of Colorado after ABC’s 20\/20 <\/em>investigation in 2010, and he is now on the published banned coaches list.<\/p>\n

That’s a real high-character crowd gathered this week at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n
