Here’s a story that seems appropriate to share as I take a break for foreign travel: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last week announced that it was setting up a new office for the express purpose of going after people who lied on their citizenship applications. See <\/span>https:\/\/apnews.com\/1da389a535684a5f9d0da74081c242f3<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Presumably, these prevaricators could include 1984 and 1988 Irish Olympic swimming head coach George Gibney, who lied on his 2010 citizenship application about his 27-count indictment in 1993 for illicit carnal knowledge of minors. In 1998, after Gibney had moved here, the Irish government’s Murphy Report concluded that his many accusers “were vindicated” by the assembled evidence of the Garda, the national police.<\/span><\/p>\n

This new ICE office probably isn’t targeting Gibney, however. That is because <\/span>Gibney never became a citizen<\/span><\/i>. His application was denied … because he lied on it.<\/span><\/p>\n

So the next question becomes: Did Gibney’s green card get revoked as a consequence? And the answer is again: No. At the same time U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services was rejecting the citizenship application, ICE was ruling that he was “not removable,” for the reason that he was never convicted of a crime. In 2016, U.S. District Court Judge Charles R. Breyer expressed puzzlement over this contradiction.”We’re not a haven for pedophiles,” Breyer said.<\/span><\/p>\n

In between the ’93 indictment and the ’98 Murphy findings, a 1994 Irish Supreme Court decision had quashed the criminal charges on technical grounds. Essentially, the court made a statute-of-limitations interpretation favorable to Gibney. One of the sitting justices for this controversial decision, Susan Denham — later the chief justice — was the sister of Gibney’s lawyer, Patrick Gageby.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today the demagogue Trump is complaining that Mexico and other Central American countries do not send us their “best people.” He wants to deport citizenship application liars. He also wants to end diversity lottery visas. Gibney got one of those, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the American government commits the human rights atrocity of separating children from their parents at the southern border, what is important to remember is that all winners of diversity lottery visas and all liars on citizenship applications are equal — but some are more equal than others.<\/span><\/p>\n

All George Gibney did was molest dozens of young athletes, and rape and impregnate one of them right here on American soil in 1991, prior to fleeing from his sex-criminal past, ultimately in suburban Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n

On a recent visit to Washington, Irish legislator Maureen O’Sullivan asked her American counterpart, Congresswoman Jackie Speier, why this state of affairs persists.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s a damn good question.<\/span><\/p>\n
