The University of California-Berkeley’s Public Records Act compliance office today released to Concussion Inc. some documents that were originally requested by us in April.<\/span><\/p>\n

A quick review shows that these documents all appear to be internal emails in the wake of the 2014 death of football player Ted Agu, in an exertional sickle cell trait attack the university covered up from the public and the Alameda County sheriff and coroner. The Agu fatality also came three months after a related incident in the program of head football coach Sonny Dykes’ strength and conditioning assistant Damon Harrington: the criminal and apparently coach-inspired “code red” assault by a player, J.D. Hinnant, against teammate Fabiano Hale, which sent Hale to the emergency room with a concussion.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have immediately begun working with other critics of the excesses of Cal football, some of them on campus, to study these documents, publish them, and report on them. Though the university said our public records request was now “closed,” it is not yet clear whether the production here constitutes a complete disposition.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the past, the university has selectively disclosed to other news outlets, most notably the <\/span>San Francisco Chronicle<\/span><\/i>, all or much of the same material acquired by this reporter. The result has been institution-friendlyChronicle<\/em>spin of the Cal football death scandal: coverage with elements of criticism, but generally falling far short of full reporting and analysis of Dykes football’s culture of crime and cover-up.<\/span><\/p>\n
