In what is shaping up as a possible note-for-note replication of the story of Ted Agu’s death in Berkeley in 2014, a 20-year-old player at Chadron State College in Nebraska died two months ago in an offseason conditioning drill. The cause of death first appeared to be simple heart failure but now is being pinned on “exertional sickling” in an athlete with sickle cell disease trait.<\/span><\/p>\n

The regional media at the Nebraska-South Dakota border are reporting these findings following the completion of a forensic pathologist’s report and a review of Eric Goll’s medical records and history.<\/span><\/p>\n

Goll, a 330-pound defensive lineman, collapsed and became unresponsive during a practice on August 11. The college said he had checked himself out of a non-contact drill, and emergency response was summoned for what turned out to be the second time that day. Earlier, a Chadron Rescue Unit had been called to the field for a player “dehydrated and difficulty breathing,” according to police logs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Concussion Inc. is seeking to get exact details on the structure of the fatal drill and the sequence of events. Cal’s Ted Agu collapsed multiple times during a bizarre hill-climbing and rope-pulling race pitting sub-groups of the whole football squad against each other. Berkeley also is known to have concealed from the Alameda County coroner and sheriff’s office knowledge of Agu’s sickle cell condition, and we don’t know if that was the case with Goll and Chadron.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
